Applicant Visit Days

School of Computer Science Applicant Visit Days

The School of Computer Science operates exclusive applicant visit days from the end of October 2013 to the end of March 2014 for students who have applied to our undergraduate courses and are eligible to be considered for an offer. You will automatically receive an invitation if you are made a conditional offer. If you are applying for our MSci or MEng programme, or are an applicant offering non-standard qualifications we may invite you to attend an applicant visit day first, in order to aid us in our decision-making process.

We strongly recommend that you attend an applicant visit day. It gives you a great opportunity to meet current students and academic staff, experience subject specific talks and demonstrations, explores the campus and take a look at the fantastic facilities and accommodation that we have to offer. We also hope to provide you with further information on the practical side of attending university (careers and employability, fees and finance, university life and welfare), and give a chance for both applicants and parents/guests to find out more. Our computer science ambassadors are a mixture of first, second and third year students, and will be with you throughout the day.

Benefits of attending an AVD:

We ask that all applicants sit a short aptitude test and a short, informal interview with a member of our academic staff. Neither are designed to 'catch you out' or cause you unnecessary anxiety. The aptitude test does not test whether you have previously studied computing, but instead probes the thinking abilities that computer scientists need. Meeting with our academics gives you a chance to ask questions directly. Both give you an excellent opportunity to experience life as a computer science undergraduate, talk directly to our academic staff, and get to know the department. We use this information to get to know our applicants, and make more informed decisions when results are released next year. We also use the information when allocating our undergraduate scholarships, worth up to £3000.

Our applicant visit days start at 9.45am, and end at approximately 4pm. Booking is essential for each applicant visit day, and information on how to do so will be sent to you via email and post.

Travel and directions

Instructions on how to find us and a map of the campus can be found here. The School of Computer Science is located in building Y9 (yellow zone) on the main Egbaston campus map. We are a two minute walk from the University train station, which is our recommended method of travel. The 'University' stop is just two stops away from Birmingham New Street.

Birmingham is a wonderful city to visit and a vibrant place to study. If you are looking to visit Birmingham either before or after your applicant visit day, please find further information on things to do here

Open Days for Prospective Students

If you have not yet applied, you can come along to our University wide Open Days.

Undergraduate applicant facebook page

You are invited to join our 2014/15 undergraduate applicants facebook page. This will give you a chance to talk to fellow applicants, current ambassadors and the admissions and marketing team. We'll use this page to update information throughout the year.
