Scholarships for International Students

Undergraduate International Scholarships

Undergraduate International Scholarships

The School of Computer Science offers scholarships to all international students applying for undergraduate programmes whose fees are not paid by a sponsoring body. These are worth between £1,500 and £3,400 per year. These awards are cumulative, so the highest achieving students will receive a total of £3400 to offset their tuition fees.
All eligible students will receive an Entry Bursary of £1500 per year. Those whose performance is judged to be excellent will receive an additional Excellence Scholarship of £1,900 per year (for a total of £3,400). Therefore, the highest achieving students could receive a total of £13,600 over a four year degree in the form of a reduction in tuition fees.

  • An 'Entry Bursary' of £1500 will be awarded to all students who are categorised as overseas for fees purposes. This Bursary will be automatically retained for each year of study, provided that the student proceeds normally to the next level of study.
  • An additional 'Excellence Scholarship' of £1900 will be awarded to international students with an excellent academic standard. To retain the 'Excellence Scholarship', students must continue to perform at First Class level – i.e. they must achieve an average mark of at least 70% at the end of each year.

Excellence Scholarship

 £1,900

International students who have excellent academic qualifications (equivalent to A*AA at A-level)

The Bursary and Scholarship are awarded to privately funded students who are categorised as overseas for fee purposes (i.e. not including European Union nationals).

There is no special application process - the awards will be made automatically to all eligible students admitted to the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham who apply to and select one of the School's courses as their firm choice before 1st August.

Students who are in receipt of support from other funding bodies that entirely cover their tuition fees are not eligible for any of the awards.

The International Entry Bursary will automatically be retained for each year of study, provided that the student proceeds normally to the next level of study. A student who fails on academic grounds to proceed to the next level of study will forfeit this award.

To retain the International Excellence Scholarship, a student must continue to perform at First Class level, i.e. they must achieve an average mark of at least 70% at the end of each year.

The Bursary and Scholarship are awarded as a tuition fee contribution and will be paid directly by the School of Computer Science to the University of Birmingham on behalf of the holder.

A wide range of international qualifications will be considered - please contact the admissions tutor to find out the criteria that would apply in each case.

The University's decision on whether a qualification is deemed as 'excellent' is final.
