DFID Shared Scholarship Scheme
Not offered in 2008/09.
These scholarships are funded jointly by the Department for International Development and participating UK universities, including the University of Birmingham. This scheme assists academically able students from developing Commonwealth countries who would benefit from higher education in Britain, to the developmental advantage of their home countries, but who for financial reasons are unable to study in the UK and are outside the scope of other British government support schemes. Applicants must be able to show that the programme that they will study will assist in the development of their country.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be from a Commonwealth developing country; be under the age of 35; not have studied for a year or more in a developed country; not be employed by a local or national government department or a parastatal organisation, and return to their home country for work or study after the scholarship ends.
- What does the award cover? Living expenses, tuition fees, air fare to and from the UK, some other allowances.
- Application: You must first apply and be offered a place on a postgraduate programme. You should then apply for a DFID Scholarship. DFID application forms are available in early February each year from the Student Funding Office.

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Ambassadorial Scholarships are intended to promote international understanding. Scholars are expected to act as ambassadors of goodwill during the term of their scholarships, both in their daily interactions and through formal appearances before Rotary clubs in the host country. They are also expected to share their experiences with clubs in their sponsoring district after the end of the scholarship.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens of countries in which Rotary clubs are in operation. It should be noted that scholarships are funded by voluntary contributions by local Rotary clubs, so you should enquire if your local club sponsors scholarships.
- Applicants must have completed at least two years of university/college-level coursework or equivalent professional experience and who are not already studying abroad. Generally, scholars are not assigned to a country where they have previously lived or studied.
- What does the award cover? Living expenses, tuition fees, air fare to and from the UK, some other allowances.

Finn-Guild Scholarships
Finn-Guild Scholarships are aimed at fostering links between Britain and Finland. They are awarded to members of Finn-Guild or those whose families are members of Finn-Guild. Awards could be conditional on obtaining a place to study at a British university, so applicants should apply early for a place at a British university. - Eligibility: Applicants should either have been a member of Finn-Guild for at least two years or their family must have been a member of Finn-Guild for at least two years, and wish to study for academic, professional or vocational study or training in Britain.
- What does the award cover? Grants depend on the funds available.
- Application: These scholarships are administered through the Guild office in London. You should contact the office at the address given below for an application form.
