How have you got where you are today, from your student days?
When I started my degree I already had some experience with Java, so I manage to secure myself a part-time job with the school of Computer Science as Java Demonstrator, as well as this job being another source of income, it also develop my programming skills significantly, I continued doing this job through out my degree(1st, 2nd and 3rd year). When I graduated in 2004, I manage to secure my self job with Consultancy company in the South East, I worked there for couple of months as Business Intelligence Consultant, then it became clear to me that I really wanted to get into the financial sector(Investment Banking in Specific). Without the skills I gained from my course at Birmingham University and the reputation of the school I wouldn't be where I am today.
What is the best thing about what you are doing now?
The best thing of what I am doing now is being involved in High profile projects and the faith my employer have on me to involve me in such projects. I am learning the best technologies as well as learning about the Business side which is very important for developers within the financial sector. I am also going to Paris for month in Oct 2006 to attend my advance training in Investment Banking at INSEAD Business School, this is part of the training Dresdner Kleinwort provide for Analyst to become an Associates.
I work in the technology group at Dresdner Kleinwort , developing systems used by Traders, Product Controllers and Risk Management worldwide. I overcame challenges of distance while communicating with team members in Frankfurt, New York, Tokyo and gained knowledge of the derivatives and credit risk management business, as well as acquiring an excellent breadth of technical knowledge. I gained valuable experience of working within a development team in a fast moving business environment. My projects involved me being pro-active in research and analysis and being able to effectively manage a coordinate a project with many moving parts to bring real benefits to the business. my role is mixture of Business Analysis and Development on various workflow projects.
What was the best thing about your time as a student here?
The best thing would be getting involved in various activities the school of computer science organise(i.e. seminars), as well as having the pleasure to work alongside some of the best researchers in the world.
In what way did living and studying in Birmingham live up to your expectations?
I had to finance myself at university, so I wanted to start course at top university with the minimum money I can spend, Birmingham University was the ideal place for me, hence it is much cheaper to live there comparing to London, as well as the value for education you get while studying there and the amount of time lecturers spent with me to help me reach where I am at the moment.
What advice would you give to current students studying on your degree programme?
I believe Artificial Intelligence is the next big thing, and a lot of companies in various sector have already started to look for people from and A.I background. The course provide the right mixture between Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, hence you will have the exposure to learn about both areas.
