Alumni Stories - Marcin Chady
Name: Marcin Chady
Job: Senior Games Programmer
Employer: Radical Entertainment, Canada.
Degree: PhD Computer Science 2003
There are two great things about working for Radical Entertainment. Firstly, the job is more like playing than working: I look forward to going to work every day and the only thing which prevents me from staying there until late is my family who are even more fun.
I research, design and implement technology in the most cutting-edge and innovation-hungry segment of computer industry. Among other things, I worked on the application of academic-grade artificial intelligence in video games, and architecting a game engine for the latest generation of entertainment hardware. I was also involved in the production of Hulk2 and Scarface. The workplace itself is equally enjoyable, complete with free food, free booze, and World Cup matches shown on big screens in our huge penthouse living hall.
Tips for getting into industry: we are screaming for programmers, but paradoxically, it's really hard to get a job unless you already have a few years of experience in game development and a published title. The easiest way to get the foot in the door is through a student placement and by being prepared to earn very little in the beginning. It gets better very quickly after that. It's more fun than I ever imagined and my current employer is based in Vancouver, a simply amazing place.
What is the best thing about what you are doing now?
I do what I love - programming and artificial intelligence - and live in Vancouver, a simply amazing place.
What was the best thing about your time as a student here?
Birmingham University gave me confidence in my academic and professional abilities. I met many people who offered me friendship and respect.
