Career experiences since leaving Birmingham University

After completing my MSc, I spent 6 years working on various research projects in the Computer Science dept at Birmingham. During this time I was working on my PhD part-time. I left in 1992 to join VideoLogic as a software engineer, and progressed to software team management and then programme management. In 1999, VideoLogic changed its name to Imagination Technologies and formed a number of divisions. I ended up working for the product division (now called PURE Digital) as Director of Business Development and then back to my original field as Director of Software Development.

What is the best thing about what you are doing now?

Being part of a team which creates successful products based on our own home-grown technology, which are critically acclaimed and which also sell in high volume. Our currrent product range is based around DAB digital radio, and PURE is the world's leading brand for DAB digital radio products.

What was the best thing about your time here as a student?

I enjoyed the whole experience of living in Birmingham, including the university sports facilities, excellent social life and curries! It was a pleasure to work in the beautiful surroundings of the campus.

In what way did living and studying in Birmingham live up to your expectations?

The university and its facilities were excellent, and Birmingham is a much better place to live than most people realise. Thanks to my studying and work at the University, I spent 10 years in total living there and was very happy to do so.

What advice would you give to current students studying on your degree programme?

Make the most of all the opportunities on offer, work hard and have fun too!
