Alumni Stories - Tariq El-Hoss

Name: Tariq El-Hoss
Degree: BSc Computer Science
Graduated: 2004

During my second year of study I formed a design partnership with fellow University of Birmingham graduate Anthony Chaffey and between us we successfully completed several small web development projects.

Following our graduations we founded Web Media Works and recruited a third member, Benjy Stanton who had just completed a degree in Digital Art and Digital Animation in London. Web Media Works offers an array of design services including web development, design for print, software development and animation and has gradually grown over time attracting clients from several cities across England and Wales.

I credit the University of Birmingham with both giving me the knowledge and confidence to start my own business. The diverse range of modules I was able to complete gave me a good grounding in all aspects of computer science.

I am charged with several roles within the company spanning both web and software development in addition to sales and accounts. Since we began I've often found myself drawing on skills acquired from nearly all aspects of my study and beyond. The Java programming language was a key part of many of my modules and forms one of core aspects of what I do.

The size of the University helped improve my communications and real world skills. I was even given the opportunity to enrol onto an accounting module, which at the time was only taken out of interest, but now forms a key part of my job! I was one of the lucky students who started my course in the new Computer Science building and would question anyone who thought they'd find better facilities elsewhere.

This marriage of great facilities and inspiring Staff makes the University of Birmingham a great place to study.
