Q. What interests you about Computer Science, and why did you decide to study it at UoB?
Computer Science is a pioneering subject and hugely exciting. CS gives you the chance to work at a local level, but gives results that can reach out to people on a global scale. We live in the information age, where the rise of social networks like Twitter, Facebook is ubiquitous in daily life, and every business is becoming increasingly electronic. So it is an excellent time as any to study computer science.

I think computer science will open many doors in life to anyone who chooses to pursue it. What attracted me to UoB was the strong reputation it has for computer science, as it has ranked consistently in the top 10 in the UK. I also found that the University is excellent in terms of career service, employer relationships and extra-curricular activities.
Q. Which part of your course have you enjoyed the most?
I have enjoyed the entirety of my course - in particular the team based modules which are fun because you get to work on practical projects and code software with fellow colleagues.
Q. What do you think of the facilities in the school?
Facilities in the school are pretty remarkable. From a very well-funded robotics lab to other well-equipped labs, an in-house library and free printing, I think the School of Computer Science provides for its students in every way. Also, you do not need to buy books, because they are all available in the school library. Many other facilities like printing and scanning are conveniently all in-house as well.

We also have a student common room which is great for collaborative team-work, and conducting meetings, but also to take a break from work and relax for a while.
Q. What are your experiences with the staff in the school?
In one word, memorable!

The staff here is the most friendliest and intelligent bunch of people I have ever come across. I found that they always have time for student queries and provide support at every level and stage of your degree.
Q. Where are you going for your Year in Industry/graduate role?
Goldman Sachs, in the Equities Trading Technology Division.
Q. How did you get this role and do you feel CS helped in getting it?
I got this job at Goldman Sachs after completing a year placement there in between my final and penultimate year. The School of Computer Science was instrumental in helping me get the job. From providing information regarding vacancies in companies to helping with CVs and letters, the School of Computer Science was crucial in this. Moreover, the skills and technologies learnt during my time studying computer science here at Birmingham, is very well regarded and highly sought after by employers.
Q. Did you find careers events that CS run helped you in finding your role?
Absolutely! The School of Computer Science has excellent links and relations from top tier companies - be it software houses or investment banks. From my experience in the industry, students of computer science at the University of Birmingham are targeted by employers because they are very-well regarded.
Q. Did you make use of the Careers & Employability Service?
Yes - with regards to reading literature, and information about various roles and vacancies that were available.
