How do animals work out which parts of their environment are the most important or interesting to them, and gather information on those parts to guide their action later? In this talk, I will briefly outline what we already know about how animals gather and represent information about the world. I will then discuss a few of the unsolved problems relating to how animals collect information, before suggesting some approaches which might be useful in unravelling these problems.
