Welcome our robotics web page.
Introduction
Robotics is a field that has about 50 years of history starting with, possibly, the first von Neumann computer. Compare this with the more established fields of mechanical or civil engineering and one quickly realizes how juvenile our knowledge in this area is.
We were given a broad mandate on what constitutes Robotics and encouraged to build almost anything that has some form of robotic application. The building blocks given to us are a complete set of Lego Technic and a box additional accessories. The "brain" used on our robot is a Motorola 68HC11 based Handy Board used in conjunction with a 12 V battery pack. The battery could provide approximately 14 minutes of operating time under normal load conditions. Of the 2 available languages, the Motorola 68000 assembly language and Interactive C, we decided on the latter as it is easier to use and provides more interactive possibilities.
We chose to build a moveable can finder that is capable of navigating itself within a fixed arena in order to locate and gather cans of different colors (red and blue, at the moment) and transport them to a assembly area. The main points of this robot would be :
|
Self-navigation within the test arena in relation to the assembly area and the scattered cans.
|
Location of cans against the backdrop of arena panels.
|
Retrieval of cans of varied colors and positions to assembly area . |
