Assessment Opportunities
Disclaimer
This information was correct at the time of writing, but the University Regulations are the only definitive guide.
Terminology
There are two periods in which assessment can take place, whether by examination or by continuous assessment:
- During Terms 1 to 3: this is sessional or normal assessment.
- During the Summer Vacation up to the end of the Supplementary Examination Period: this is supplementary or resit assessment.
For the dates of terms and examinations, see under "Dates" in the Student Handbook.
Second assessment opportunities
In the absence of accepted mitigation
- students are automatically allowed only ONE further opportunity to pass a failed module
- EXCEPT for students in Year 3 of an MEng/MSci programme or in the Final Year of an undergraduate programme, who are not allowed any further opportunities.
The further opportunity is normally by EITHER:
- taking the resit assessment
- repeating (internally resitting) the entire module and all of its normal assessment in the next academic year.
The School of Computer Science Syllabus Page for each module defines the form of the normal and resit assessment. In some cases, resit assessment is not available, so that if a second assessment opportunity is allowed, it can only be by repeating.
It is the student's responsibility to to attend any supplementary examination and to find out about any supplementary continuous assessment by approaching the module lecturer(s).
All students who have failed modules should seek advice to ensure that they fully understand what to do next. This is particularly important for students with mitigation, since special conditions may apply.
