Teaching Load Model

The load for a module is calculated as a notional number of hours using the formula:

Load = Alloc*(A + 0.5*B*N)

where Alloc is the fraction of the module allocated to the lecturer, A and B depend on the type of module and N is the number of students taking the module. For a single 10cr module, A = 60, B = 1. A single 20cr module taught in one semester is treated as producing a load only 50% more than a single 10cr module. Linked modules which have a single examination have B reduced by 0.25. The table below summarizes the resulting values.

Modules which extend over two semesters are treated as combinations of two one semester 'submodules', linked if there is a single examination, unlinked otherwise.

A few modules do not fit into this table.

Values of N are as always subject to some uncertainty!

Overall Teaching Loads

To avoid over-interpretation of small differences and to take account of uncertainties in the number of students taking a module, overall loads have been divided by 10.

Administrative Load Model

This section has not yet been updated for 2005/06.

All known administrative tasks potentially undertaken by academic staff have been grouped into seven 'bands'. This is intended to be an approximate rank ordering of the work load involved, taking into account total hours, spread over the year, potential degree of disruption by students, etc.

School Committee agreed not to attempt to assign hours to the bands. However, it should be noted that the scale is not linear. Combining tasks is currently done using the formula (Sum(B^P))^1/P, where B = Band and P = 1.7.

Please note that most ex officio tasks are not listed. (E.g. the Academic Manager is also Chair of Teaching Committee and the Head of School is Chair of School Committee.)
