Staff Handbook: 2.4 The Management of Teaching and Learning

Introduction
This document attempts to provide a brief summary of the way in which teaching and learning are managed within the School. Not all links or components are shown. See 2.2 Management Structures for the full details. (Current post-holders are listed in 2.3 Officers and Committees.)
The diagram below and the remaining content of this document are significantly out-of-date, due to changes in the organization of the School and the introduction of Colleges by the University.

A key feature compared to the way in which some
University Schools and Departments are organised is the partial separation of
the management of content and delivery from the management of pastoral care and
progression. The
Academic
Management Team oversees the
content and delivery of
programmes
and
modules.
The
Student
Development & Support Team,
including the
Welfare
Team, oversee all student support
(see 3.5
Student
Support and Guidance), which
includes pastoral and welfare issues as well as the management of academic
progression (see 3.4
Monitoring
Student Progression and
Achievement) assisted by
Academic
Advisors who each have
responsibility for an assigned set of students. Programme Directors or Year
Tutors (where they exist) have no pastoral responsibilities.
Some Interactions in the Management Structure
Module
Providers interact with the
Academic Management Team in setting up the
'Module
Catalogue'
and in preparing module documentation (see 3.2.2
Module
Quality Assurance Procedures).
The Academic Management Team is responsible for 'top level' documentation (e.g.
most programme documentation) and for ensuring quality throughout; Module
Providers are responsible for creating and maintaining documentation for their
modules (including the contents of
Module
Boxes, etc.) as well as for
delivering the modules and assessing students.
In monitoring assessment,
Teaching Committee is assisted by the
Assessment
Monitoring Group (not
shown in the diagram). This Group, chaired by the
Examinations
Officer, is responsible for
monitoring all assessment (i.e. continuous assessment as well as examinations),
and reporting appropriately to Teaching Committee.
Module
Providers interact with the
Teaching Committee since it sets policy; they
should also report matters of concern which they feel the Academic Management
Team have not dealt with appropriately.
Students
interact with the Student Development & Support
Team, particularly by bringing welfare and pastoral problems to the
Welfare Team; the team also follows up problems
which have been reported by academic staff including
Academic
Advisors. The Student
Handbook is maintained by the Student Development & Support
Team.
Students
interact with the Staff/Student Consultative
Committee by electing representatives. Via these representatives they
then are able to influence policy. The Committee is also a 'last resort' for
problems and complaints (which should always have been taken elsewhere
first).
Senior members of the Student
Development and Support Team are members of the
Teaching Committee and senior members of the
Academic Management Team are members of the
Staff/Student Consultative Committee to ensure
that welfare and academic issues are always 'in-step' and to ensure the total
quality of provision.
