HELP XCOLOURS Jonathan Meyer, June 27 1990 This file contains a list of all of the named colours contained in the X Windows colour database. Many colours have different combinations of spellings, capitalizations, word spacings etc. Each line represents one colour, and shows each of that colour's possible spellings. For facilities that allow you to use the Poplog Widget Set with named colours, see REF * XpwCore/XpwSetColor. NB: Colours that look good on one colour monitor may not look the same on another. Be careful when choosing colours, making sure that it is always possible for the user to redefine important colours. Also note that the divisions into different shades listed here are only a guideline - its best to view the colour to see what it looks like. These indicate how much red, green, or blue composes each individual colour. These are usually specified in the following manner: #rrrrggggbbbb where "r", "g", and "b" are hexadecimal numbers indicating the amount of each primary colour involved. Numbers with fewer than 12 digits are padded out with zeros following each primary colour field. For example: #rgb is the same as: #r000g000b000 It is usually *not* recommended that this representation for colours be used since different monitors produce different shades when given the same inputs. Colour names are more portable since they are usually adjusted by the supplier to appear roughly similar on different systems. The problem with colour names is that their is no standard naming scheme. Developers of X programs should always ensure that the colours used by their application are easily tailorable by the user. Some example RGB specifications are: black : #000 yellow: #ffffffff0000 (red & green, but no blue) --- C.x/x/pop/help/xcolours --- Copyright University of Sussex 1990. All rights reserved. ----------
