Other

This page lists some of the (occasionally very!) non-academic things I get up to in my spare time.

Committee service

I've served on various committees during my time in the School. If you're a taught student, I strongly recommend taking part in a management structure that's open to you: not only will it give you a feel for how an academic organisation is run, you'll also have a say in major decisions about your modules and degree programmes. We're remarkably lucky to be members of a department that conducts itself so openly, and that considers the views of its students seriously. Take advantage of that.

Computer Science Society

The Computer Science Society is the School's official Guild-affiliated social society, run by the students, for the students. If you're new to the University (or even just transferring into Computer Science from another school for an intercalated year or MSc), it's a great way to meet like-minded people in a pressure-free environment. The society regularly runs a wide range of events throughout the year (bar crawls, meals, video game nights, laser tag and more), and membership is cheap and worthwhile — you'll easily recoup your losses after just a few events in the first semester.

The society elects a group of its own members to become its committee for the following academic year at the end of the second semester. I was a committee member for several years, and I recommend getting involved if you want to improve your leadership, organisation and communication skills.

I created the current version of the #bbcqt bingo card generator, and was awarded the Dimblemedal for services to Dimblebot (photos coming soon).
