Personal info

I am a Man of Kent by birth (I was born east of the river Medway) and inclination although I have now lived some 3 years plus in the West Midlands with my wife and cat. Whilst I enjoy the area it takes time to really establish roots, especially given that we are now upping sticks and moving into Leicestershire. However, this is likely to be our base for a long time to come so I'd better get used to it.

Of course, as a research student in computer science I spend a lot of my time attached to a computer of some shape or form. Currently, I am using a delightful little eeePC 1000 loaded with Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron". A very sweet little piece of kit with decent battery life, a good screen and a reasonable keyboard. However, I do have interests outside of computers.

When I am not working then I like to spend as much time as I can with my wife. We are both keen walkers (there are lots of nice walks to explore in our new location) and we both enjoy sailing although we have not managed to get out on the water a great deal in the last couple of seasons due to time pressure. We dream of casting off at some stage in the future and living a life on the ocean. Whether or not it will happen I don't know but it's good to dream.

I am a keen rugby follower (both codes but union in particular) and am a season ticket holder at Harlequins (and yes you can be both a rugby lover and a Harlequins supporter at the same time). I am currently struggling to come to terms with the new experimental law variations (ELVs) in the sport. They are a complete waste of time if you ask me.

Additionally, I am interested in wild mushrooms and plants. I am also keen on wild food. Well its free and I've not poisoned myself yet.

I am a hifi nut with eclectic music tastes ranging through classical, jazz, folk and rock. I once built my own hifi kit using lots of lovely valves (300B direct heated triodes in a class A push-pull configuration) but these are not terribly pc in these energy conscious times.

I rode motorcycles for a number of years in my previous life and I would like to own one once again although it's a bit difficult on a student budget.
