IDEAS AS PERSONS or other ANIMATE BEINGS

(* His mind wandered back to her harsh words earlier.*..) ... [NP] (..* Then HIS ANGER SKIDDED AROUND TO HIMSELF *) for wasting time thinking about the frisson between him and Sachs.
[[Text: source, p.132]]
{The anger: IDEAS/EMOTIONS AS PHYSICAL OBJECTS or IDEAS AS PERSONS OR OTHER LIVING BEINGS?
The first sentence uses MIND AS ANIMATE BEING OR LIVING BODY.}

(* What alarm bell did those words just ring? *) Something I know so well (* THAT WON'T ANNOUNCE ITS PRESENCE IN MY MIND, THOUGH I KNOW IT'S THERE, WAITING.*)
[[Text: source, p.157]]
{Mixing with MIND AS PHYSICAL SPACE.
First sentence uses COGNIZING AS PHYSICALLY SENSING}

My sudden pulse of terror that passed so quickly brought his name with it -- his false name. (* The knowledge is there, like something dark swelling inside me. I CAN FEEL THE ANSWER TAPPING AT THE BACK OF MY BRAIN, TRYING TO GET IN.*)
[[Text: source, p.157]]
{Mixing with MIND AS PHYSICAL SPACE.}

He was experiencing a peculiarly mixed set of emotions. Horror and dismay ... A compassionate pity ... But beyond these perfectly natural reactions he was (* fired with an ardent glow of curiosity and interest.*) (* One side of him warred with the other.*) He felt that it was abhorrent to look upon crime, especially murder, as anything more than foul and unthinkable. At the same time (* THIS LITTLE DEVIL OF CURIOSITY KEPT ON TUGGING AT HIS SLEEVE DEMANDING ATTENTION.*..) ... The argument was good. But (..* THE LITTLE IMP OF CURIOSITY WAS BETTER.*)
[[Text: source, p.30]]
{NB: mixing or switching: IDEAS and EMOTIONS AS PHYSICAL OBJECTS; MIND PARTS AS PERSONS; IDEAS AS ANIMATE BEINGS}

He returned with a sigh to his sermon. For twenty minutes, blessed with great fluency, he wrote at breakneck speed and then, once again, (* his inspiration dried up *..) and (* THE FACTS OF Tregarthan's murder BEGAN TO REVOLVE LIKE A FLOCK OF BLACKBIRDS ABOUT HIS HEAD.*) [NP] ... For a long time the Vicar stared at the half-completed sheet of writing before him then, unable to stomach (..* his aridity of thought any longer,*) [he went out for a walk].
[[Text: source, p.110]]
{NB: mixing or switching: IDEAS AS PHYSICAL OBJECTS and IDEAS AS ANIMATE BEINGS}

Whenever (* HER THOUGHTS REACHED THAT HOUSE THEY GAVE A LITTLE JUMP AND TRIED TO SLINK AWAY.*..) ...[several sentences]... (..* HER THOUGHTS SLUNK AWAY; but not before one of them had sent a curdling whisper through her mind, `_The tea would taste of blood._'*)
[[Text: source, p.101]]
{Mixed with IDEAS AS INTERNAL UTTERANCES and MIND AS PHYSICAL SPACE.}

She never in her life had had that sort of absurd thought. It was just that she didn't sleep, and so (* her brain was relaxed and let THE REINS OF HER THINKING GO SLACK.*)
[[Text: source, p.101]]
{Mixed with MIND AS ANIMATE BEING.}

Lucy (* made a violent lunge after her thoughts [about Vera falling out of the window] and STRANGLED THEM.*)
[[Text: source, p.137]]
{The strangling part suggests that the thoughts are being viewed as animate beings. The lunging part is compatible with that but does not suggest it by itself.}

Harriet ate, diligently, with her eyes down, but (* her mind raced back and forth like an animal in a cage,*) and suddenly (* A THOUGHT SO HORRIBLE LEAPT AFRESH TO HER MIND *) that she blurted, aloud: "Is he sick?"
[[Text: source, p.549]]
{NB switch from / mix with metaphor of the whole mind, rather than an individual thought, being an animate being.}

Random, senseless (* thoughts FLITTED AROUND IN HIS HEAD.*..) ... Like a man who has lost his sense of direction, Tsukuru's thoughts (..* ENDLESSLY CIRCLED THE SAME PLACE.*)
[[Text: source, p.27]]
{"a man": Explicit animate being as metaphorical source. Animacy also implicit in "flitted." See entry under Mind as Physical Space for further comments, about succeeding sentences.}

Finally, (* as if LURED IN by the melody [of some music playing] *..), images flashed behind his eyelids, one after the next, appearing, then disappearing. A series of images without concrete form or meaning, (..* RISING UP FROM THE DARK MARGINS OF CONSCIOUSNESS, SOUNDLESSLY CROSSING INTO THE VISIBLE REALM, ONLY TO BE SUCKED BACK INTO the margins on the other side and vanish once again. Like the mysterious outline of MICROORGANISMS SWIMMING ACROSS the circular field of vision of a microscope.*)
[[Text: source, p.296]]
{Mixed with MIND AS PHYSICAL SPACE.}

(* THOUGHTS, unoccasioned and FAINT, DRIFTED VAGUELY INTO HIS MIND AND OUT.*..) He half remembered the comforts of his home in Boston; but that seemed unreal and far away, and (..* OF THOSE THOUGHTS THERE REMAINED IN HIS MIND ONLY THIN GHOSTS OF REMEMBERED SENSATION *) -- the feel of a feather bed at night, [etc.].
[[Text: source, p.214]]
{Within each of the sentences, mixed with MIND AS PHYSICAL SPACE.
I am assuming "ghosts" are animate beings in this passage, especially because of the "thin",
and that the conception of the thoughts as ghosts affects the first sentence as well, even though if taken by itself it would only suggest IDEAS AS PHYSICAL OBJECTS.
Also I take "ghosts of remembered sensation" to mean the ghosts are ghosts of the remembered original sensations themselves, not that there were at some stage some memories of sensation and then later ghosts of those memories arose.
Note also the home being "unreal and far away": case of COGNIZING AS INTERACTING WITH NON-OWN-MENTAL ENTITIES.}

[A] dozen (* DISTURBING THOUGHTS WRESTLED IN HIS MIND.*) Was it just possible that ... . Immediately (* the circumstances *) which must have conspired to make such a procedure possible (* PRESENTED THEMSELVES TO THE YOUNG MAN *) in all their array of absurdity. ... [He] was (* discomforted.*)

We create an inner atmosphere of no pressure, just being with what's there. (* WE ASK GENTLE QUESTIONS AS A WAY OF INVITING THE FEELING TO TELL US MORE ...
