Call for Malay Speakers Participants is now Closed
We cannot thank you enough to everyone who helps in responding to this survey. The purpose of the questionnaire is to evaluate the perception of the polyglot TTS quality. There are three synthesisers used for the evaluation for Malay synthesiser, two of them are polyglot synthesisers and another one is the monolingual synthesiser. Please be informed that the Malay polyglot synthesiser is generated using i) British English phone set and voice and ii) Afrikaan phone set and voice. The pronunciation is based on Malay Johore-Riau Standard. The benchmark's system is using Malay phone set and voice. The polyglot synthesisers both uses intonation model from the developed framework.
There are a few issues raised in regards to this questionnaires. When respondents answer this survey, they have no idea what is it that they are doing. The survey simply asked them to listen and evaluate. It was important for respondents not to have a background knowledge. It was important for respondents not to be 'drown' by the 'outside noise'. There is no right or wrong answers. There is simply; "what do you think" and no pass judgement. Yes, same sentences were repeated by different synthesisers and it is unavoidable. Thus, respondents may feel that their preference is a bit bias. It is fine. We admit that typing back what you hear is not easy even though there are very short non-sense sentences.
What is this research about? It is about the speakers' level of acceptence of the polyglot speech synthesisers. We believe most respondents for Malay are polyglot speakers if not multilingual. This research defined multilingual and polyglot slightly different. Multilingual speakers refer to those who are raised bilingual and often communicate with both languages at the same time. Polyglot speakers refer to those who acquire a second language after one is already comfortable to communicate using the native/first language. However, in the survey, the question: Are you a multilingual speakers? DOES mean: Do you know any other language other than Malay? This research is using different language data to construct polyglot Malay synthesiser. Again, thank you very much for the all the help in participating this survey as well as advertising my request for respondents. God bless.
