Theme: Searching - developing strategies for effective searches

Researchers need to be able to find relevant literature on their topics. To be an effective searcher, you must understand:

  • the structure and distribution of the literature in your field;
  • how to evaluate information retrieval databases;
  • how to carry out a search;
  • how to evaluate your results.

Individual lectures will look at:

  • reading, peer review and systematic literature searching;
  • machine-based searching using keyword-based systems;
  • machine-based searching using citation-based systems;
  • searching for books, theses and technical reports.

How to prepare

  A familiarity with Google Scholar is assumed.
