Academic and Related Activities & Interests
Retired from full-time employment in the School of Computer Science on 30 September 2008. From 1 November 2008 to 31 January 2009, worked for the College of Engineering & Physical Sciences, assisting with preparation for the QAA Institutional Audit. Now an Honorary Senior Lecturer.
My current academic interests in computer science are mainly in the cognitive science area although I'm also (re)learning about some of the computational aspects of evolutionary biology. I've maintained a longstanding interest in taxonomy and the 'tree of life'. Some of the recent changes suggested by molecular phylogenetics are startling to those of us first educated in traditional morphological approaches. Whether these changes are soundly based or artefacts of the statistical methods used remains to be seen. At present I share some of the doubts of Bateman, Hilton & Rudall (2006).
