HCI 2/Extended Continuous assessment

(italic entries are for HCI Extended only)

Task:  You have to design a piece of technology to support either children (up to age 11) or the elderly (approximately, over 65).  You can make assumptions about the technology if you wish, and there can be futuristic elements within it, though these should be explained.  You do not have to implement the design to create a fully functional working system.

You should design the technology using a user centred design process, which has the following main components:

  1. Define user group/target audience
  2. Initial requirements gathering/problem definition
  3. Creative design
  4. Prototype design
  5. Testing prototype – questionnaires /personas
  6. Critical appraisal of prototype
  7. Redesign
  8. Evaluation

Most of these stages have the user at their heart, and you will be exposed to a variety of tools, approaches and techniques to allow you to undertake these stages.

Groups: you will work together in groups of 5

Documentation: You are expected to document the process in detail on a blog.  The blog will form the assessment.

Assessment: You will be assessed on how well you understand and apply the process, not on the success or otherwise of the final design.

In the final blog entry, you must indicate clearly, with permalinks, the main blog entries that demonstrate how you have covered the learning outcomes of the module, identified below:

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

Assessed by:

1

Explain and discuss practical and theoretical aspects of Human-Computer Interaction.

Examination, Continuous Assessment

2

Apply HCI principles to practical problems.

Examination, Continuous Assessment

3

Participate in analysis and design work in HCI.

Continuous Assessment

4

Demonstrate appreciation of the research literature in one subfield of HCI.

Continuous Assessment

Mark scheme:         Marks are awarded against the numbered sections above as follows:

Parts 2, 3, 6, 7, 8: 5% each

Parts 4, 5: 10%

Identification of learning outcomes in blog: 5%

Total for HCI 2: 40%

Blog entry on research topic (1 page): 20% - a brief review of one research topic, with links to the key papers and a summary of the field, plus your views.

Total for HCI-Extended: 60%

Deadline: 5pm end of semester. nnnnnNo hand-in required - blogs will be assessed from that date.
