HCI course - syllabus and student presentations

HCI in context:

Diagram is taken from the ACM SIG CHI, and puts all the aspects of HCI into an overall framework. Ignore the U/H/C/D letters, but notice how it reflects the human, the computer, the context of use, and then evaluation, design and examples. Our structure is outlined below.

  1. What is HCI – design, models, evaluation.  Need to understand people, computers and methods
  2. Basic human abilities - vision, hearing, touch, memory
  3. Computers – speed, interfaces, widgets, and effects on interaction
  4. People – psychology, ergonomics, etc.
  5. Interaction styles
  6. Design guidelines
  7. User-centered design, task analysis/GOMS
  8. Technology and change
  9. Web page design
  10. Evaluation
  11. Mobile devices  – issues (design, limitations, where next)
  12. Games
