About me

I currently serve as the Senior Birmingham Fellow in Robotics, based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Birmingham, where I have worked since 2008. My training included undergraduate and masters degrees in Engineering from Oxford University, and a PhD in Robot Vision undertaken between University College London and UK imaging industry. I also worked as a Assistant Professor (Research) at Stevens Institute of Technology, USA, 2004-2008.

I am an interdisciplinary engineer with diverse research interests, although I mainly focus on robotics. My main interests include vision and sensing, robotic grasping and manipulation, robotic vehicles, human-robot interaction, AI and machine learning.

I am actively involved in applied robotics and imaging projects with industry. I currently have funded collaborations with nuclear industry, defence industry, industrial robotics industry, and manufacturing industry.

I am also particularly interested in education and public communication of science, and have spent many years working with young people, in both UK and USA, teaching science through engaging hands-on activities with robotics. I have been teaching robotics master-classes for young people at Royal Institution of Great Britain over the past five years.
