  abstract =     "In this chapter, a procedure for estimating the
                 capacity of distributed generation based on mini hydro
                 plants has been presented. This procedure has been
                 successfully applied for a practical case where this
                 type of distributed generation can be installed. The
                 classic method used to estimate the capacity of a mini
                 hydro plant was also introduced and then time series
                 forecasting techniques were applied in order to enhance
                 the historic data available. Based on the results of
                 these forecast techniques and the available historical
                 data, an estimation of the design water flow was
                 performed, and a possible capacity for a mini hydro
                 plant calculated. The time series forecast analysis has
                 been conducted using an ARIMA model, a neural network
                 and Genetic Programming by means of the software ECSID.
                 For each case study, the obtained forecast results have
                 been validated against actual measured data. The
                 forecast technique based on neural networks has proven
                 to give the best results for the case under
                 consideration. Also, the selection of the most
                 important electro-mechanic components of a proposed
                 mini hydro plant based on the selected design water
                 flow has been described.",
