  abstract =     "This paper presents a new platform for development of
                 small application-specific digital embedded
                 architectures based on a data path controlled by a
                 microprogram. Linear genetic programming is extended to
                 evolve a program for the controller together with
                 suitable hardware architecture. Experimental results
                 show that the platform can automatically design general
                 solutions as well as highly optimised specialised
                 solutions to benchmark problems such as maximum, parity
                 or iterative division.",
