This module introduces concepts, techniques and tools for the computational modelling and analysis of data from medicine and biology. The key schemes for data representation and a survey of state-of-the art methods for statistical data analysis, machine learning optimisation, classification, cluster analysis, data reduction and image analysis will be presented in examples drawn from a range of sources of biomedical data. The module will also provide both theoretical background and practical experience of implementing and applying the techniques.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. Explain and apply mathematical and computational methods for the modelling and analysis of biomedical data.
  2. Analyse biomedical research problems and identify suitable modelling and analysis strategies.
  3. Write software to implement a range of modelling and analysis methods, and critically appraise their use on different problems.

Sessional: Continuous assessment: : 30%. Structured written unseen examination of 1.5 hours: 70%.
