Software Design Study

Level 3/H

Russell Beale Semester 2 30 credits
Co-ordinator: Russell Beale
Reviewer: Mark Lee

The Module Description is a strict subset of this Syllabus Page.

Outline

The software design study gives the student the opportunity to work in a team (typically 5 or 6 students) on a challenging and substantial software design project. This will normally include mainly the early phases of the software lifecycle (requirements analysis and software design), but may also include the further development of prototype software and/or demonstration software. The final report must include a fully costed proposal for the development of a complete software product.

Aims

The aims of this module are to:

  • give the student practical experience of working as part of a team on a challenging software design task
  • allow the student to demonstrate competence as software engineering professional, and to apply what has been learnt in the other components of his or her degree programme
  • develop the research skills to find, evaluate and apply knowledge on topics that are completely new to the student

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. complete the design of a substantial piece of software to a professional standard, which may include the further development of prototype software
  2. work effectively and professionally in a team with full responsibility for the conduct and management of the project
  3. give an oral presentation of the work, together with a full written report
