The School of Computer Science provides specialist teaching and conducts research in software engineering. We are proud to deliver outstanding postgraduate education that offers varied and exciting career opportunities around the world. We offer a taught MEng course in Software Engineering and supervision for postgraduate research.
MEng Software Engineering
The MEng in Software Engineering is a four-year full-time undergraduate Masters degree course based on the three year BEng Computer Science with Software Engineering degree. For full details please refer to the MEng Software Engineering page. The School also offers taught postgraduate programmes in other disciplies.
Postgraduate research (PhD)
The School boasts a tradition of academic excellence and produces internationally recognised research. Within the School of Computer Science there are strong groups working on Nature-Inspired and Intelligent Computation, Intelligent Robotics, Computing Systems, Theoretical Computer Science, Medical Imaging, Human-Computer Interaction and Software Engineering.
There is considerable interaction between different areas, and several people and PhD students work in two or more groups. The School has no divisive fragmentation into separately managed subgroups, and maintains a friendly and collaborative atmosphere. There are normally three or four research seminars each week, with a good balance between visiting and internal speakers and between formality and informality. A significant proportion of the School's budget is used for research support, including provision for modern computing facilities, a school library to complement the main university library, funding or travel for conferences, regular visiting seminar speakers, and guest positions. The majority of our PhD students work in more than one groups(e.g., Software Engineering and AI; Software Engineering and Security; Software Engineering and HCI etc.). The PhD programme is typically three years of individual research on a topic agreed between the student and supervisor. Applicants for a PhD in Computer Science, with a focus on Software Engineering should be highly motivated and have an outstanding academic record. Further details can be found on the postgraduate research page.
