FORM FOR CAS-AI LIST JOINERS

This form is

    http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/poplog/cas-ai/cas-ai-form.txt

Please fill in the form in a plain text editor and then send it to

    a.sloman@cs.bham.ac.uk

either as the body of a plain text message or as a plain text (.txt)
attachment, i.e. not a .doc, .docx, .pdf file. If for any reason .txt is
difficult, PDF is the second best alternative, e.g. because that avoids
problems with non-portable fonts.

Please delete from your reply all inappropriate responses, and if
necessary add extra options.

After I have received a number of these forms, I'll circulate them to
the cas-ai list with all confidential parts omitted.

If you have not yet joined the list you can do so either

Feel free to add items you think may be of interest or suggest
improvements to format, etc.

Thanks
Aaron

    none
    have taken a course/read books (e.g.?)
have written AI programs (languages/tools used)
        Type: robotics, vision, language, learning,
              reasoning, music, game playing, ...
    already teaching it
have joined the online Stanford AI course
know a lot and would be willing to help others

(Add anything to do with making machines more intelligent, or more like
humans, or modelling human or animal competences -- learning, seeing,
walking, talking, manipulating, etc.)

2. Your interest in AI

[Delete or Add items as appropriate]

    am committed to teaching it

    considering whether to teach it

just want to learn about it

have students who have asked about AI/want to learn about AI

hope to involve teachers in other subjects in my school,
        e.g. maths, language, psychology, others?

Already use robots for AI teaching.

Could do exercises involving a video camera and image processing.

    other ???

3. Time commitment/availability

    [Delete as appropriate]

Want to do exercises, gain experience, develop course materials

Willing to help or collaborate with teachers in other schools

Just want to try a few things to get a feel for AI languages
        and techniques

Only want to read and contribute to email discussions

Don't know yet. Just curious for now.

4. Student interest
    [Delete or add as appropriate]

Some students are already doing work in AI [Number?]

Several of our students are interested [Number?]

One or two of our students are interested

    No students interested yet

5. Local Resources
    [Delete/Add as appropriate.]

Already have the following AI languages/tools installed:
        [list them]
[In school? or on private machine at home?]

Have ready access to linux in the school
        Specify version: Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.

    Have linux at home
        Specify version: Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.

Don't have linux but could easily get it installed

Can't have linux at school but could run VirtualBox with
    a virtual linux on windows/macs

Would be able to install PuTTy and Xming and access linux
    remotely, or use Ajax.
[NOTE: I don't know the full range of possibilities for remote
access to a linux system from inside a school. Aaron.]

Willing to help others who don't have access to linux, but want to
    take part.

[NOTE: The emphasis on linux is here because the things I can
help people get started on work on linux. There's a version
that can be run on MS windows without any of the graphics.
Feel free to mention other things you have that may be of interest
to others. I use only linux for all my work and non-work.]

6. Help you would like to offer

If you would like to offer AI teaching materials, pointers, advice,
code, help for AI-novices, talks, etc. please say so here. My
assumption is that I'll start off a introducing a subset of AI
programming techniques, and other things will grow later, especially
as people whose expertise extends beyond mine contribut.

7, Please add any other questions you think should have been asked, and
your answers:

8. Optional:
Any more information about your background or job or CV
[If any of it is not to be sent to the list, please say so.]

9. Privacy:
[Delete at least one of these]

 A. I don't mind the list archives being readable by non-members
interested in learning about AI in schools.

 B. I would prefer the list archives to be available only to list
    members.

 C. I shall not join (or will unsubscribe) if list archives are
    available to non-list members.

10. Lee Gillam (Surrey University) has set up an Amazon-based linux
installation (Ubuntu) with all of the poplog AI teaching materials
installed. Some people would rather access that remotely via the
internet than attempt to install linux locally. If you would like
to use this system you can be given an account on it.

[Delete at least one of these]

 A. Yes please: I would like to access Lee's linux system.

 B. No thanks.

(There is no need to write to him directly. Aaron Sloman manages access
to that machine for CAS-AI users.)
