The syntax of types binds more tightly than that of expressions and patterns. Right-recursive constructs extend as far to the right as possible, e.g. "fn" match -- Lexical Items ------------------------------------------------------ The following lexical classes are described in HELP * LEXICAL: var con exncon tyvar tycon lab strid sigid funid (id) longvar longcon longexncon longtycon longstrid (longid) scon (scon) -- Types (ty) --------------------------------------------------------- tyvar_seq ::= tyvar empty "(" tyvar-1 "," __ "," tyvar-n ")" (n >= 2) ty_seq ::= ty empty "(" ty-1 "," __ "," ty-n ")" (n >= 2) tyrow ::= lab ":" ty << "," tyrow >> ty ::= tyvar "{" << tyrow >> "}" ty_seq longtycon ty-1 "*" __ "*" ty-n (n >= 2) ty "->" ty "(" ty ")" -- Patterns (pat) ----------------------------------------------------- patrow ::= "..." lab "=" pat << "," patrow >> var << ":" ty >> << "as" pat >> << "," patrow >> atpat ::= "_" scon << "op" >> var << "op" >> longcon << "op" >> longexncon "{" << patrow >> "}" "(" ")" "(" pat-1 "," __ "," pat-n ")" (n >= 2) "[" pat-1 "," __ "," pat-n "]" (n >= 0) "(" pat ")" pat ::= atpat << "op" >> longcon atpat << "op" >> longexncon atpat pat con pat pat exncon pat pat ":" ty << "op" >> var << ":" ty >> "as" pat -- Expressions (exp) -------------------------------------------------- exprow ::= lab "=" exp << "," exprow >> atexp ::= scon << "op" >> longvar << "op" >> longcon << "op" >> longexncon "{" << exprow >> "}" "#" lab "(" ")" "(" exp-1 "," __ "," exp-n ")" (n >= 2) "[" exp-1 "," __ "," exp-n "]" (n >= 0) "(" exp-1 ";" __ ";" exp-n ")" (n >= 2) "let" dec "in" exp-1 ";" __ ";" exp-n "end" (n >= 1) "(" exp ")" appexp ::= atexp appexp atexp infexp ::= appexp infexp id infexp mrule ::= pat "=>" exp match ::= mrule << "|" match >> exp ::= infexp exp ":" ty (L) exp "andalso" exp exp "orelse" exp exp "handle" match "raise" exp "if" exp "then" exp "else" exp "while" exp "do" exp "case" exp "of" match "fn" match -- Declarations (dec) ------------------------------------------------- valbind ::= pat "=" exp << "and" valbind >> "rec" valbind clause ::= (Note 1) << "op" >> var atpat-1 __ atpat-m << ":" ty >> "=" exp (m >= 1) fvalbind ::= (Note 2) clause-1 "|" __ "|" clause-n << "and" fvalbind >> (n >= 1) typbind ::= tyvar_seq tycon "=" ty << "and" typbind >> conbind ::= << "op" >> con << "of" ty >> << "|" conbind >> datbind ::= tyvar_seq tycon "=" conbind << "and" datbind >> exnbind ::= << "op" >> exncon << "of" ty >> << "and" exnbind >> << "op" >> exncon "=" << "op" >> longexncon << "and" exnbind >> directive ::= (Note 3) "infix" << d >> id-1 __ id-n (n >= 1) "infixr" << d >> id-1 __ id-n (n >= 1) "nonfix" id-1 __ id-n (n >= 1) dec ::= "val" valbind "fun" fvalbind "type" typbind "datatype" datbind << "withtype" typbind >> "abstype" datbind << "withtype" typbind >> "with" dec "end" "exception" exnbind "local" dec "in" dec "end" "open" longstrid-1 __ longstrid-n (n >= 1) empty dec << ";" >> dec directive Notes: 1) where -var- has infix status, either "op" must be present or the clause may be written in infix form, i.e. at the start of a clause, "op" var (atpat-1, atpat-2) __ may be written (atpat-1 var atpat-2) __ and the parentheses may be dropped if "=" or ":" follows immediately. 2) all clauses 1 __ n must have the same -var- and the same number of formal parameters (m) 3) "d" is a single digit number 0 - A command is terminated either by a semicolon or by a newline. See HELP * COMMANDS for more information. --- C.all/pml/help/syntax --- Copyright University of Sussex 1994.
