Speech can be considered to be composed of a sequence of distinctive unit sounds known as phonemes. These differ between languages and can be separated by a person who speaks that particular language. Each phoneme corresponds to a cluster of actual unit sounds which native speakers generally do not distinguish. These unit sounds are known as phones.
